History of PC gaming

Early PC gaming

·         William Higinbotham created the first video game ever in 1958. His game, called "Tennis for Two," was created and played on a Brookhaven National Laboratory oscilloscope. In 1962, Steve Russell invented SpaceWar!. Spacewar! was the first game intended for computer use. Russell used a MIT PDP-1 mainframe computer to
 design his game.

·         In 1984, the computer gaming market took over from the console market following the crash of that year; computers offered equal gaming ability and since their simple design allowed games to take complete command of the hardware after power-on, they were nearly as simple to start playing with as consoles
·         The Commodore 64 was released to the public in August 1982. It found initial success because it was marketed and priced aggressively. It had a BASICprogramming environment and advanced graphic and sound capabilities for its time, similar to the ColecoVision console. It also utilized the same game controller ports popularized by the Atari 2600, allowing gamers to use their old joysticks with the system. It would become the most popular home computer of its day in the USA and many other countries and the best-selling single computer model of all time internationally.

 ·         The IBM PC compatible computer became a technically competitive gaming platform with IBM’s PC/AT in 1984. The primitive 4-color CGA graphics of previous models had limited the PC’s appeal to the business segment, as its graphics failed to compete with the C64 or Apple II. The new 16-color EGAdisplay standard allowed its graphics to approach the quality seen in popular home computers like the Commodore 64. The sound capabilities of the AT, however, were still limited to the PC speaker, which was substandard compared to the built-in sound chips used in many home computers. Also, the relatively high cost of the PC compatible systems severely limited their popularity in gaming

·         1989 and the early 1990s saw the release and spread of the MUD codebases DikuMUD and LPMud, leading to a tremendous increase in the proliferation and popularity of MUDs. Before the end of the decade, the evolution of the genre continued through "graphical MUDs" into the first MMORPGs (Massively multiplayer online role-playing games), such as Ultima Online and EverQuest, which freed users from the limited number of simultaneous players in other games and brought persistent worlds to the mass market. A prime example of an MMORPG MUD is the game Runescape created by Jagex.
·         In the early 1990s, shareware distribution was a popular method of publishing games for smaller developers, including then-fledgling companies such as Apogee (now 3D Realms), Epic Megagames (now Epic Games), and id Software. It gave consumers the chance to try a trial portion of the game, usually restricted to the game’s complete first section or "episode", before purchasing the rest of the adventure. Racks of games on single 5 1/4" and later 3.5" floppy disks were common in many stores, often only costing a few dollars each. Since the shareware versions were essentially free, the cost only needed to cover the disk and minimal packaging. As the increasing size of games in the mid-90s made them impractical to fit on floppies, and retail publishers and developers began to earnestly mimic the practice, shareware games were replaced by shorter game demos (often only one or two levels), distributed free on CDs with gaming magazines and over the Internet
·         Published in 1993, Myst itself was one of the first computer games to make full use of the new high-capacity CD-ROM storage format. Despite Myst’s mainstream success, the increased popularity of action-based and real-time games led adventure games and simulation video games, both mainstays of computer games in earlier decades, to begin to fade into obscurity.
·         It was in the 1990s that Maxis began publishing its successful line of "Sim" games, beginning with SimCity, and continuing with a variety of titles, such as SimEarth, SimCity 2000, SimAnt, SimTower, and the best-selling PC game in history, The Sims, in early 2000.
·         In 1996, 3dfx Interactive released the Voodoo chipset, leading to the first affordable 3D accelerator cards for personal computers. These devoted 3D rendering daughter cards performed a portion of the computations required for more-detailed three-dimensional graphics (mainly texture filtering), allowing for more-detailed graphics than would be possible if the CPU were required to handle both game logic and all the graphical tasks. First-person shooter games (notably Quake) were among the first to take advantage of this new technology. While other games would also make use of it, the FPS would become the chief driving force behind the development of new 3D hardware, as well as the yardstick by which its performance would be measured, usually quantified as the number of frames per second rendered for a particular scene in a particular game.
2000's in gaming
·         As affordable broadband Internet connectivity spread, many publishers turned to online gaming as a way of innovating. Massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPGs) featured significant titles for the PC market like EverQuest, World of Warcraft, and Ultima Online.
·         Beginning with PCs, a new trend in casual gaming, games with limited complexity that were designed for shortened or impromptu play sessions, began to draw attention from the industry. Many were puzzle games, such as Popcap's Bejeweled and PlayFirst's Diner Dash, while others were games with a more relaxed pace and open-ended play. The biggest hit was The Sims by Maxis, which went on to become the best selling computer game of all time, surpassing Myst.[97]
·         Other casual games include Happy Farm and Zynga games like Mafia Wars, FarmVille, and Cafe World, among many others, which are tied into social networking sites such as Myspace, Facebook, and Mixi. These games are offered freely with the option buy in game items, and stats for money and/or reward offers.
·         The multi-purpose nature of personal computers often allows users to modify the content of installed games with relative ease. Since console games are generally difficult to modify without a proprietarysoftware development kit, and are often protected by legal and physical barriers against tampering and homebrew software,it is generally easier to modify the personal computer version of games using common, easy-to-obtain software. Users can then distribute their customised version of the game (commonly known as a mod) by any means they choose.
     Current PC's
The average gaming PC cost’s around 500 -800 and if you want a top of the line PC you will be paying well over 1,000 dollars.
·         A new report concerning the PC gaming hardware marketindicates that computer-based sales will continue to grow at a rate of 11 percent from now until at least 2014. These figures are primarily based on the fact that over 250 million game-capable PCs will ship in 2011, compared to only 230 million PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 consoles that have shipped since 2005.

Stuff Rob Says

Week 15

Where is Nate??

Lol this quote make me smile and frown at the same time. Me oversleeping has caused me to miss this class twice this week and its our last week together!! I'm sorry for missing class. But I wanted to let you know I haven't skipped this class. It so fun to skip its one of the few I actually enjoy.

Week 12

This is my favorite class-Rob

I'm so gald Im part of your favorite class. It makes me happy that we can create a good learning environment for us and you. It really sad that you'll never again have a class a cool as us ever again though. But we should all take intro to broadcasting to replicate this class.

Here is another random video that has nothing to do with my quote what so ever

Week 11

SOMEONE WRITE THAT DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!

This quote is from a fellow classmate Andrew. He felt the need to scream that when ever Rob said something funny or something that could potentially hurt his career. I think that its funny that Andrew says this pretty often. Its a good way to get a quote also.

Week 10

"If I ever acted like I was going to punch my uncle he would tell me something like this"
( referring to the 3 second of foolishness)

I thought this was pretty funny because that is something my uncle would say too. I just talked to uncle last night. Talking to my uncle makes me homesick lol. I can't wait for thanksgiving break. I need this time off from school!!

Week Eight

I reach, you reach, we compromise, 50 is a big number

This quote was from when we talked about the 50 wiki's. Which I still don't quite understand. BUT its good to know that we can work together to make this easier for the both of us. Because 50 is quite a big number

This video has absolutely nothing to do with my quote but I think its pretty funny, and I thought I should share it

Week Seven

"Okay.................enjoy the cartoons"

You said this before starting the first documentary on Monday. I got excited for a little bit and as soon as it started I realized that you lied to me. It wasn't a cartoon at all not even close. Despite the lie the documentary was pretty good.

Week Six

"I'm Going to make so many RobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRobRob Larson videos!!!!

Although this may not quite be a "direct" quote you still said it. This was from the video of the stalker that you showed us on Friday. I thought it was funny that someone would take so much time to make these videos about you some are pretty funny. But you should really report those to youtube.

Week Four
"Its full of information I can unleash........implement in the classroom"
Rob talking about our courses rigorous information
9/30/11

Week Three

9/16/11

We are gonna laugh at each other this semester. I hope this doesn't terrify anyone.

My response- Laughter is one of life's best medicine and there is nothing wrong with a little laughter

Week Two
9/9/11
" You may perceive me as nonsense stringing together, hopefully you trust me and we can string it all together dynamically"

My response- With a name like Rmoney218 and RCa$h how can I not trust you Rob!!!

Shattered Glass Ops

XBOX 720

According to a report Gates made a comment at a recent press conference that lead many to believe that the next generation Xbox console will be released possibly next winter for a Christmas release. Not only will they will be coming out with a new console but it will be bundled with a new version of Kinect. This new Kinect can scan and entire room to enable the best body capture motions. The new Kinect can capture up to 10 people at a time!! Many games are planned around the release such as Just Dance 4: The House Party ft Kid and Play, Halo 5, GTA 5 and Fable IV. A Gears of War Prequel is being planned where you will be playing as Marcus Fenix’s father. Since the PS4 is looking at a 2013-2014 release the 720 will have a huge jump on it. But Nintendo’s Wii U will be releasing in early 2012 will have the best advantage over both Microsoft and Sony. If Nintendo comes out with a strong launch then both Microsoft and Sony will have some trouble on their hands. Not much has been said about the PS4 except motion capture will be built into the system allowing for total body tracking. Otherwise Sony has been pretty tight lipped about their next console. Hopefully next year around this time we will be gearing up for the launch of Microsoft’s next generation console. I don’t know about you but I’m ready for the next generation of gaming!!!!

Earliest Media Essay

Earliest Media

To be honest when I joined this class, I joined for extra credits I never thought I would learn so much about the media. Even though I am surrounded by media constantly (Facebook, Twitter etc) I didn’t realize how far back media when. Media is a medium for (human) communication. One of the first things we learned in this class. Word of mouth was the first definite form of communication and well….media. There once was a time where if you needed something you had to physically go and tell them. As time progressed the telephone was developed. And with the phone you could call someone and yet still you could go and meet them. But with the dawn of the internet you can instant message someone, email and Skype (video chatting) someone. The internet allows us to do things instantaneously and it changed how our world works. Without media our world would stop. Without media our world wouldn’t have even began.

Media is constantly changing. The printing press started putting information out for the public. It was started by the Holy Roman Empire by German Johannes Gutenberg. The printing press gave birth to books and newspapers. Books contain much knowledge but they are slowly changed. Most information is now online and even books are digital now and days. I can’t wait to see how much media progress in the next 5 years. If I think back 5 years ago I was 15 years old and MySpace was the primary social network. And now it’s Facebook (soon to be Google +……….maybe) but the media is constantly changing and shifting. I wonder what it’s going to be in 5 years.

I can’t wait to see what media comes next…………..especially video games but
